Sad news. Danny Schur died. (From the Winnipeg Free Press)

condolences to his family and friends.

Danny Schur, who composed and produced the Winnipeg General Strike musical Strike! and its film adaption Stand!, died Monday of brain cancer. Aged 56.

Rainbow Stage artistic director Carson Nattrass, who was part of the original cast of Strike! when it debuted on the Kildonan Park stage in 2005 and in revivals leading up to the 100th anniversary of the 1919 general strike, called his friend and colleague "formidable," a man who refused to take no for an answer even when the city initially refused to let Rainbow host the musical.

Nattrass says Schur penned Strike! with Winnipeg writer Rick Chafe. He booked the Rainbow Stage... It nearly bankrupted him.

“He's everything.”

Schur was determined to film the musical. He didn't give up until the Canadian Labour Congress gave $1.25 million to help schools get Stand! videos.

When director Robert Adetuyi joined the film, Strike! became Stand!, focusing on how the strike affected women, blacks, and Indigenous Winnipeggers.

He cast Laura Wiggins, Marshall Williams, and Gregg Henry after crucial cast members' schedules changed.

Stand! premiered in September 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival and premiered in Winnipeg in November 2019, a few months after the strike's centenary.

Schur spent decades studying Winnipeg's marginalized populations, especially the Ukrainian minority, and the 1919 strike.

He researched Bloody Saturday, the violent fight that killed Michael Sokolowski, a prominent character in Strike! and Stand!, amid reams of historical information and old newspapers.

Schur paid for Sokolowski's Brookside Cemetery headstone in 2003. He led walking and biking tours to city strike sites, many of which appeared in action!

In 2003, Schur workshopped Strike! at the Ukrainian Labor Temple, which conducted strike meetings in 1919.

“The North End hasn’t changed much in 85 years. "Urban poverty and racism haven't altered, just the faces."

Schur's musical debut, The Bridge, commemorated Canada's 100th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement.

In 2015, Schur produced Made in Winnipeg: The Terry Sawchuk Origin Story, a documentary about the Ukrainian Canadian Hall of Fame goaltender.

Despite being fit from playing hockey almost daily in the winter, Schur had a heart attack in 2019 during one of those games. After surgery and a brief rehabilitation, he shared videos on Facebook of himself stopping shots from half his age at outdoor rinks.

Schur moved to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba's School of Music after learning piano and singing in a Ukrainian church chorus in Ethelbert, 370 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg.

Schur worked with pop performers Chantal Kreviazuk, McMaster & James, and Doc Walker before turning to musical theater in 2000. He and his wife, Juliane Schaible, wrote the 1999 Pan American Games theme song.

Before his illness diagnosis late last year, Schur returned to pop music in 2022, composing songs and making videos with teenage vocalist Leah Janae.

Nattrass, for whom Schur wrote O'Reilly's Song in Strike!, hopes that Winnipeg's theater community will continue Schur's legacy of making plays about the city, province, and its people.

Nattrass claims that he is the inspiration for Rainbow Stage's Strike!-like performances. “He proved it could be done.”

A Prayer for Danny Schur and for Those Who Love Him

O Divine Force of the Living and the Dead, approve of Danny Schur, whom we trust has entered this day into your realm. Award harmony, light, and everlasting youth to him who has been taken from us while still a kid. May he always be aware of the tinge of your affection and the gleam of your light in your vast domain? Look delicately upon his family, whose hearts are overburdened with distress. Stroll with them; console them; encompass them with heavenly messengers to lift them from the profundity of their grievous misfortune. At long last, look generously upon our Focal Catholic People group. We stand as a family in our moments of triumph and bliss; give us the mental strength to remain as a family now, despite our lack of Danny Schur. May we console each other with expressions of confidence, trust, and love? Persuade our hearts that everything works for the good of those who trust in God. So be it.

Who is Danny Schur?

Danny was dead set on making a movie version of the musical. He did not give up until the Canadian Labour Congress provided funding in the amount of 1.25 million Canadian dollars for an effort to disseminate Stand! movies to schools. Danny's entire life was preoccupied with the strike that took place in Winnipeg in 1919 and the effects it had on the city's disadvantaged people, particularly the Ukrainian community.

In the middle of reams of historical information and outdated newspapers, he conducted research on Bloody Saturday, the bloody brawl that resulted in the death of Michael Sokolowski, a significant figure in Strike! and Stand! In 2003, Danny was the one who put up the money for the memorial at Brookside Cemetery honouring Sokolowski. He took excursions through the city on foot and by bicycle to various strike sites, many of which were featured in Stand. Made in Winnipeg: the Terry Sawchuk Origin Story is a documentary that Danny made about the goaltender who is in the Ukrainian Canadian Hall of Fame. The film was made in 2015.
