Cristiano Ronaldo's Twitter account becomes unverified after Elon Musk carries out blue tick purge

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to escape the wrath of Twitter owner Elon Musk who embarked on his ‘blue tick’ cull on Thursday.

Ronaldo is Twitter's most followed athlete but no longer has the blue tick used to confirm the validity of his account.

Musk’s controversial move to disband those with legacy blue ticks unless they pay for it at £9.60-per-month has seen the Portuguese superstar slump to unverified status.

The move has not gone down well with millions of Twitter users.

That is due to concerns over misinformation and impersonation now that real accounts no longer have the checkmark.

Many users have turned their backs on Musk’s latest money-making scheme and it appears millionaire footballer Ronaldo is one of them.

However, Musk confirmed that some celebrities have held onto their blue tick because he personally paid for their subscription himself.

One person to hold onto his tick is NBA star LeBron James who has 52.7million followers.

Author Stephen King and actor William Shatner have also retained blue tick status thanks to Musk’s generosity.

But Ronaldo wasn’t so lucky despite having 108.3million Twitter followers – over double the amount of James.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner still has his ever-popular Instagram account which has garnered a whopping 58million followers.

Ronaldo fans are given an insight into his football and family life alongside partner Georgina Rodriguez.

Ronaldo is currently residing in Saudi Arabia having signed for Al Nassr in January in a deal that nets the 38-year-old a massive £173m-a-year.
